Lester's Letter
Dear Rotarian,
What is painted yellow, made of wood, has a little graphite, and piece of rubber called? To most of us the answer is simple - it's a pencil. It is a basic tool that we take for granted - it is something that we dispose of when it gets too small and if we loose it we grab for anther one. To others it is hope, an education, a way out of poverty and a means of expression. It can be the difference between happiness and sadness.
The following describes another opportunity for "Service Above Self".
In 1998, Maria Vick was visiting Africa with her mother and happened by chance to take a photograph of a group of 102, second graders with their only teacher. Out of all the children one young boy in particular stood out. He was clutching a small broken pencil. It was all he had and it was clearly his most prized possession.
For Maria, this image symbolized everything about thevalue of education and how important it is that children around the world have access to the tools they need. For less than the price of a soft drink, a pack of one dozen pencils can be purchased that could be used to help 12 children. With this in mind Maria started "The Pencil Project". The objective of the project is to collect pencils and writing materials and distribute them to schools where children have virtually none of the basic requirements with which to begin an education.
In the next Lake Views, I will introduce you to Gayathri and Rajeswari Ramanathan two students attending High School as a senior and sophomore and how they decided to make "The Pencil Project" a success in their community.
Stand by Lake Chelan Rotarians, I feel a project coming on!

Important Club and Member Information
Who wants to be an officer?
The nominating committee is presently searching for a few good men and women to step up as our future leaders of this great Rotary Club. The search (nominating) committee consists of Tom Warren, Denise Lorenz and Mike Steele. We would like to have some volunteers! We have a couple of excellent candidates for Director but are searching for candidates for Vice-President and Treasurer. If you are interested, please contact one of the search team members. The election is at the Club Assembly on December 6.

Official Membership Notice
At the Club Assembly on December 6, a resolution will be presented to change the name of the club from the Rotary Club of Chelan to the Lake Chelan Rotary Club. Presently our Articles of Incorporation are already in the name of the Lake Chelan Rotary Club, but the Bylaws and our official name with Rotary International are inconsistent. The Board has already informed the District Governor of this proposed change as required by Rotary International rule.
This resolution will require a 2/3 affirmative vote of those present at the Club Assembly. This change will more accurately reflect the composition of the membership of the club and make all of our legal documents consistant. Be sure and attend the meeting, not only to vote on the resolution, but also to be present for election of officers and directors for 2012-2013. |

Diapers and Shampoo - A chance to help Chelan Valley Hope!

At the Board meeting in November the Board approved our having the 2nd annual Chelan Rotary Diaper Drive. The chair is Barb Koenig and she has requested that we also bring full size bottles of shampoo. What is needed in the diaper department is larger sized diapers and Depends. Our collection date is at the meeting on Tuesday, December 13. Let us again fill up the lobby of Campbell's and fill the need at Chelan Valley Hope.

The Formation of the Chelan High School Interact Club
The idea of having an Interact Club was formed at the very end of the school year last spring. The idea was spurred on by a group of students and chaperons going on a mission trip to Guatemala. Five of the eight officers were on the mission trip, along with our club advisor, Ms. Brisa Romero. Chelan Rotary helped us fundraise for the trip, and it turned out to be an amazing experience that each of us learned from. We are all very thankful for the support the Rotary gave us.
When Interact Club first formed none of us really knew exactly what the club was about or what we would be doing within the club. The eight officers and Ms. Romero have been learning as we go, and each thing we have learned make us very sure we made a good choice with starting this club. The service portion of the club has made it very inviting for students in the high school, and there's been a lot of interest. We started a little late with getting students to join because we had to wait for our charter. However, even with the lost time, we have had a lot of students joining now, and even more who are getting interested in the things we've already been doing in the school.
The Interact Club has already been very active. We helped Rotary build bleachers at the new soccer fields one Saturday, we've done concessions for a volleyball game as a fundraiser, and now we are actively fundraising for ShelterBox. This is a great club, and we're very excited to see what else this club has to offer to us, and the good we can do through it.

Editor Ramblings
We have a weekly drawing winner! On Tuesday Don Lloyd drew the ace of clubs and won $419.50, just in the nick of time to help all of our projects and charities. The total fund was $839 which is split between the winner and the club.
This past week the question of the week was how many dollars of contributions to the Rotary Foundation does it take to become a Paul Harris Fellow. Now this was a lot easier than the question two weeks ago of who was the very first President of Chelan Rotary. As a result we had eight correct answers of $1,000. Kit was of course first, but the T-Shirt goes to Bob Myers, who beat out Jim Reinbold by a couple of minutes.
Help Wanted (I can't believe no one answered the last time I ran this ad): Your dedicated Lake Views editor will be in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico from the middle of December to the middle of January. I will have our laptop and access to the internet so I will be able to publish the newsletter. However, I won't be able to take photos or report on events. How would you like to be a reporter and photographer for Lake Views? Please talk to me if you can help out.
The header this week is a Fall photo of flowers overtaking a Wenatchee World delivery box. Obviously the best news delivered to the neighborhood this year!
